No one wants to be in pain; however, for countless Americans chronic discomfort is a part of everyday life. Desperate for relief, many are willing to give virtually anything a try, including holistic treatments that offer big promises. Recently, the Wall Street Journal took a closer look at an alternative Chinese treatment that claims to offer noticeable pain relief.

According to holistic experts, by applying pressure to a small spot between the forefinger and thumb, you can relieve both anxiety and pain. Dubbed hegu, this particular area is supposed to be a special pressure point which impacts various areas of the body.

According to the Wall Street Journal, researchers from the Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore studied hegu to see if it actually offered pain relief. Interestingly, they found that it didn’t provide much pain relief to typical patients; however, it did appear to slightly dull extreme pain in some people. While they can’t say for sure, researchers think hegu could provide slight pain relief by stimulating blood flow or endorphins. That said, it’s not clear how much of the slight benefits could be related to placebo effects.

What if You Have TMD?

A painful condition that causes a myriad of unpleasant symptoms, temporomandibular joint disorder can make life miserable. Sadly, many treatments fail to provide any noticeable relief, because they do not address the root cause of the problem. Since it also does nothing to address the source of TMD, hegu isn’t likely to offer much help to patients who are desperate for any form of lasting relief.
