Melatonin – The Sleep Hormone
New research indicates that people who have low levels of melatonin are at a higher risk of developing diabetes. Published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the study involved over 350 healthy female subjects and an equal number of female diabetics. After evaluating all of the participants, the researchers determined that they were two times more likely to have diabetes if their melatonin levels were low.
Diabetes Is A Serious Issue
Although health experts already knew that insufficient sleep increased a person’s risk for health issues; this latest research is the first to show a relationship between nighttime melatonin secretion and type 2 diabetes. From a medical professional’s point of view, this study raises fascinating new questions about the complex role melatonin plays in keeping us healthy. Unfortunately, from a sleep apneic’s perspective, the research is yet another scary example of how inadequate sleep impact’s his or her body.
