Numerous people suffer from migraines, which result in lost work time and canceled plans. Unfortunately, these people often feel as if they’re unfairly judged. Recently, a team of researchers conducted a survey to see if people really held migraine sufferers in low esteem; and the results weren’t very positive.
A Clear Stigma
Research out of the University of Vermont College of Medicine indicates that people judge migraine sufferers unfairly. According to the federal government, about 30 million Americans endure migraine symptoms, such as light sensitivity, pain and nausea. To see how people viewed these afflictions, researchers polled about 800 people, asking them several questions related to how they felt about people who suffered from chronic problems, such as panic attacks, asthma, epilepsy and migraine headaches. In the end, respondents showed clear disdain for migraine sufferers. According to the researchers who conducted the study, this prejudice probably comes from the respondents’ inability to differentiate between migraines and ordinary headaches, which are far less severe.
